Rarely, past the very youngest. Of 20 ryokan that print a child rate on their own pages, 18 charge an elementary-age child 70% of the adult rate, and even a toddler with no meal and no bedding often pays a flat fee.

What the study found

That 70% is the figure in Japan’s national model accommodation terms, whose template sets 70% of the adult rate for a child given adult-style meals and bedding, 50% with children’s meals and bedding, and 30% for bedding only.

How much does a child pay at a ryokan?

For an elementary-age child, usually 70% of the adult rate. At 13 of the 18 inns charging 70%, that buys adult-style meals or the meal is not named; at 5, the 70% comes with a children’s meal.

How much does a preschooler pay?

Usually half. At 15 of the 20 inns that print a rate, a preschooler with a children’s meal and bedding pays 50% of the adult rate; one Beppu inn’s terms say 60%.

Is a baby or toddler free?

Only the youngest, and the age varies. The free band runs from age 0 at some inns to under 3 at others. Past it, 12 inns name a flat fee for a small child who takes no meal and no bedding, from 1,100 to 3,300 yen; 5 of them charge 3,300. One Hakone inn, Omiya, gives no age at all: a young child who needs no meal, bedding or amenities stays free.

When does a child pay the full adult rate?

At junior high school age, wherever an inn says so, and three do. A few inns go further: Koto no Niwa in Dogo charges elementary children 100% of the adult rate, and at Yoshiike in Hakone one adult with one child pays two adult rates.

Why is the child rate so hard to find?

Because most inns do not print one. Of the 49 ryokan read, 29 print no child rate a plain read of their site can find; for most, the price sits inside each plan in the booking engine, and several inns say a plan’s child price can differ from their policy. Read the child line in the plan you book.

Can my child bathe with me?

In the bath of a parent of the other sex, only until about 7. That is the age in the public-bath rules of every other prefecture and city read (Hokkaido’s newest standard found, from 2016, says 12). Of the 49 inns, the three that print a rule are no looser: Asaya allows it through age 6, Yoshiike through 6 only under 120 cm, and one Kinugawa inn sends elementary-age children to their own sex’s bath. An older child bathes with the parent of the same sex, or the family books a private bath: 26 of the 49 inns print one, 2 of them free, and a printed charge runs 2,200 to 5,500 yen for 45 to 60 minutes.

How should a family budget a ryokan night?

Price it as two adults plus 70% for each elementary-age child, and about half for a preschooler on the children’s meal. Then check the plan, because the inn’s general page may not be the price you pay.

How we measured this

Data collected
Data date: inns’ own pages, read in October 2026.
Sample
49 inns in 7 onsen towns (child rates, each inn's own pages); 114 baths (tattoo and family-bath rules) plus Oita's list of 128 family baths

We started from the official inn lists of seven onsen towns: Hakone, Kinugawa, Gero, Arima, Dogo, Beppu and Noboribetsu. In each town we took the first seven inns whose own website loaded and called itself a ryokan, 49 inns in all, and read each one’s own pages and accommodation terms in October 2026. That makes this a defined set rather than a sample of every ryokan, and on some of the lists the order favors larger inns. Child prices held inside booking engines are not included, because we did not search those by date. We have no child rate for the 29 inns that print none, and at two Dogo inns the pages built by script were not read: one inn’s FAQ and the other’s whole site.
